Staunch anti-traditionalists, Ebi Soda thrive on the idea of contradiction, seeming more inspired by the atmosphere inside a rave than the sounds heard inside Birdland. Their only debt to typical jazz being to attempt to innovate and experiment at every opportunity.

Characterised by erratic drum breaks, multi-effect soundscapes and searing trombone lines, Ebi Soda keep a post-punk DIY ethic close to their hearts, with songs often birthed from sweaty smokey bedrooms rather than that of the big band hall.

Press

"Ebi Soda drop a major gem with the arrival of their ethereal and electric, dance-inspired album Ugh."

Okayplayer

"Shifting between breakbeats and loping tempos, the quintet beams out melodies like wide smiles."

Dave Sumner, Bandcamp

"Scorching funk-leaning jazz with plenty of left field influences"

Robin Murray, clash magazine

"Ebi Soda continue to make their mark as one of today’s most forward-thinking new jazz bands."

Colin Smith, Twisted Soul

"Lively, frenetic tunes that will work the dancefloor, through to more meditative, cosmic psychedelia. Absolute killer!"

Sounds of the universe

"just fucking cool-sounding...

Great grooves from a great band yet again."

Jazz Revelations

ugh (2020)

Following the aptly-named 'Bedroom Tapes' EP comes 'Ugh', a collection of tunes from Ebi Soda's first ventures into professional recording. The band have made sure to carry their DIY-centric identity with them, creating a beautifully-produced record with the band's raw energy still at the forefront. Explosive drum grooves and a heavy-usage of electronic effects characterise the fluid jams we hear on 'Ugh', with the project's opener 'Ecchi' setting the tone straight away as the song moves from upbeat dancey rhythms to a nightmare-inducing dub soundscape.

The ten-track project was recorded over a year from numerous different sessions, leading it to carry an air of sporadicity to it, with its genre-switching nature leading the band to consider it more of a mixtape than an album. Ebi Soda seek to surprise and alarm listeners with this project.

'Bedroom Tapes' a D.I.Y EP, recorded in a small Brighton university flat, crafts a new free flowing style. Created through following a particular feeling among the crew, each track is a sign of the times and contains the essence of their state of mind when recorded.

Ebi soda (2019)

Drawing inspiration from jazz originators and combining their own coastal flavour and creativity creates a fresh energetic style.

The tracks ebb and flow over a foundation of rhythm, slipping into smooth guitar riffs, swelling trombone and drum sections. Ebi Soda create a big band feel, spilling tight grooves and innovative brass lines through their live shows and recordings.

Dahling, Manbaby, Verbal Intercourse and Table are the four debut tracks from the self titled EP Ebi Soda. The record is a sonic journey into modern jazz composition.
